Losing weight is different in every case

These days it seems that everyone wants to lose weight, whether it be a few pounds or more serious weight loss. The problem is, in this day and age, we expect a quick fix, and weight loss cannot occur safely overnight. Some people seem to have to little trouble dropping pounds, while others work hard for any small amount. What factors are there, that help or hinder one to lose weight quickly?

There are quite a few variables that can affect how much weight you can lose:

Starting weight

Those that have excess weight to begin with (for instance, a BMI of 25 or more) will lose weight more quickly than people with a BMI under 25. For those that are considered overweight, a safe amount of weight loss is in the range of three to four pounds a week. For those with a BMI under 25, considered average weight, a safe weight loss amount is in the range of one to one and a half pounds a week, or 0.5 to 0.7 kilograms. While this is a rough estimate, there are still other factors that may affect this rate.

As you compare your progress to others you know or have heard of, consider your starting weight to those who are different from you. You may want to lose weight quickly, but you should remember to do it safely.

The right diet

Just because one diet works for someone else does not mean that it will be the perfect diet for you. Consider what concessions you are willing to make where food is concerned. Are you ready to replace entire meals with bars or smoothies? Or will you do better with a certain amount of food items a day? Finding a healthy diet you can stick to will help you for the long run in consistently losing weight.

Diet discipline

Cheating on your diet program will jeopardize your success, and there really isn't any way around this. The people who lose the most weight stick to their plans. People who splurge constantly and deviate from their diet plans either do not lose weight or lose it more slowly. Many people who follow the diets on this website are successful, because all of these diets can work. People who claim their diets didn't work tend to have cheated the most.

How physically active are you?

Physical activity burns calories. Excess calories cause excess fat, and because you want to lose fat and thus lose weight, exercise is perfect, because you burn those excess calories. Physical activity brings all kinds of benefits, from losing weight to increases in energy to a faster metabolism.

Male or female?

Gender does have an affect on weight loss. Typically, men have faster metabolic rates than women. This is due to the difference in hormones among men and women.

How old are you?

Metabolic rates slow down as a person ages. Metabolism usually starts to decrease around 30. This can be due to hormonal changes as men and women age. Lower metabolism usually makes it harder to lose weight.

Body shape

The shape of your body affects how quickly you will lose fat and lose weight. The three general types of body shape are endomorph, ectomorph, and mesomorph.
